Description

“MAKHAN SINGH FOUNDED the trade union movement in Kenya. He linked the workers’ movement to the struggle for liberation from the
yoke of colonialism. He espoused the socialistideology emanating from the Bolshevik Revolution and fearlessly proclaimed ‘I am a
communist’. He did so in a world sharply divided into two opposing camps by the prevailing Cold War. In Kenya, pre and post independence, the terms ‘communism’ and ‘socialism’ were like red rags to a bull.”
